I live in a melting pot that is Hawaii, and the Japanese culture is largely included in the multicultural mix. It has always been a travel goal of mine to explore the origins of the food, people, history and culture that I experience on a daily basis. And what better way than flying to Japan and experiencing it all first hand.

My First Trip to Japan

 japan

I visited Japan for the first time and didn’t eat any sushi! Well, I don’t particularly like to eat all the rice in sushi, but I love sashimi and I ate a lot of it.

I chose Japan during Cherry Blossom (sakura) season because my mom had this on her bucket list. We decided to visit Tokyo and Osaka, the two largest cities in Japan. Each place offers a unique flavor of culture, food and history, which we enjoyed experiencing.

Going to Japan during high season can be a little expensive. Luckily, I planned 8 months in advance to acquire the miles and points necessary to lessen our expenses.

Spring Break in Los Cabos, Mexico

cabo

Los Cabos is located on the southern tip of Baja California Sur, Mexico, and consists of two main travel destinations: Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. The two towns are about 40 minutes apart by car or taxi and offer different experiences in each location.

When I used to think about Cabo, I’d imagine sun, beach, relaxation, and one of the top party locations for Spring Break. In fact, all of the above is true, but I found many families with young children visiting alongside the college kids.

The area is pretty secluded, apart from mainland Mexico, a tourist mecca filled with luxury resorts and golf courses in the middle of the desert. I decided to spend a few days in Cabo as I had the opportunity to visit one of those luxury resorts, and I had a great time there.

Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo?

Alaska Air Acquiring Virgin America

alaska virgin merger

Another airline merger is in the works. Earlier in the week Alaska announced a buyout of Virgin America for $2.6 billion. This is not surprising as US carriers have been consolidating the past few years: Delta-Northwest (2008), Southwest-AirTran (2010), United-Continental (2012), and American-US Airways (2015). Post-merger, Alaska-Virgin will become the fifth largest airline in the US.

I personally bought Hyatt points at a discount last year to use for the Grand Hyatt Tokyo this year, which offered an amazing deal as I was traveling during high season (cherry blossom season). I’ll go into more details about Tokyo soon.
