Welcome to Getting Off The Rock!

world travel

Aloha and thank you for visiting my blog! I’m Lea Travels (obviously not my real last name, but describes one of my passions in life). This is my first attempt at creating a blog, so please forgive me for the basic site (I have no clue about web page design) or for any writing faux pas (I’m not a professional writer). My hope is to entertain you with my travels and provide some tips in attaining your travel goals for less, or almost free, using miles and points.

About Me

The “rock” I live on is the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Living in paradise is amazing, don’t get me wrong; The weather is nearly perfect and I live in a melting pot of differing cultures, languages, religions and foods. Although I love home, I often have the desire of getting off the rock and exploring the world.

I’m a huge sports fan and enjoy attending sporting events. I love the NFL! I’ve seen the Giants, Cowboys, Saints, Bears, Seahawks, Cardinals, and most importantly Packers (Go Pack Go!) play at their respective stadiums. While traveling, I try to watch other sports as well, like basketball, hockey or baseball. I’m still trying to attend my first soccer (aka football) match, maybe a World Cup one day. I also enjoy tennis and have been to Wimbledon twice.

I have a full-time job working as a paper-pusher, shuffling paper from one pile to another. At least that’s what I tell people when I’m asked what I do in my office. I’m not a “road warrior” who travels for work and can stockpile airline miles or hotel points, nor do I have a huge paycheck that would allow me to take aspirational vacations all the time. That’s why earning miles and points have been essential to achieving my travel goals.

My Travel Experiences and Goals

As a kid, I enjoyed island hopping with my family, but even then I yearned to go beyond the borders of Hawaii. My first major trip occurred in college when I spent a summer studying abroad in Argentina to practice Spanish (I studied español in high school and university). After graduation, I took a Grand European Tour with my family that took us to England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. Since then, I’ve been back to Europe and Argentina, traveled all over the US to attend sporting events, and recently took a trip around the world to Madrid, Zurich, Athens, Beijing and Seoul.

When I travel, the destination and experiences matter more to me than the method in which I get there. In other words, I will put up with coach accommodations because the miles and cost are far less than booking First or Business Class (I’d rather book two trips in coach for the price of one in first class). I’ll definitely try it one day on a long international flight, especially if it has a flat bed.

My most important travel goal is minimal out-of-pocket expenses. Traveling is a costly endeavor, having to budget for flights, hotels, car rentals, meals and activities. For most of my travels, however, I use airline miles to cover flights and points to cover hotels and transportation. That leaves more cash for food (I love to eat!) and excursions in the city. Once I set a travel goal, I research how many miles and points are needed to attain that goal, go to work to earn those points, and redeem them on an amazing trip.

What I Want To Cover In My Blog

I want to share my experiences traveling around the world, even the world around me. To be honest, I don’t even get around the rock I live on or the neighbor islands unless family visits and I become a tourist at home. I also want to share how to earn miles and points to be able to travel for almost free. I’ve learned that travel dreams don’t have to be “once-in-a-lifetime,” it’s possible to achieve with miles and points, even if you don’t travel much or at all. In fact, almost all the points I earn don’t come from flying on an airplane or staying in a hotel. There are many ways to earn points and I will discuss them in detail in my blog.

Official Launch in January 2016

I’m doing a soft launch now to get the blog started and get the kinks out of the way. I plan to officially launch in the New Year, kicking off with the opportunity to win prizes. You’ll be entered into a drawing by leaving a comment on my blog, liking my Facebook page or following me on Twitter. All comments left before the official launch will be entered automatically, so please feel free to let me know what you think of the site and if you have any questions about travel. Keep in mind that I have a full-time job, but I will make every effort to respond in a timely matter.

Mahalo again for visiting!
