Mistakes from a World Traveler: Passport Renewal Procrastination

passport niagara

If you’ve read my trip reports, especially my Round The World trip last year, you’re probably thinking how organized and methodical I am when planning a vacation. It may appear that way now, but I’ve experienced a lot of mishaps along the way that helped me become better prepared before I travel.

In my series Lessons Learned: Mistakes from a World Traveler, I want to chronicle the mistakes I’ve made in the hopes that others will not make the same errors as well. Some of my experiences aren’t so bad, although others may seem catastrophic at the time.

My next installment reflects an incident that occurred a few years ago. I thought I had it all figured out until I realized I didn’t.

What Happened?

Earn Miles by Flying

revenue based miles - delta, united

Top: Delta’s miles calculator. Bottom: United’s mileage calculator.

I’ve spend the past few months discussing ways to earn miles without flying: Shopping Portals, Dining Rewards Network, and Partner Programs. I think it would be appropriate to discuss the old fashioned way of earning miles, the method in which frequent flyer mile programs started – flying on an airplane.

I considered briefly naming this post, “Death of Frequent Flyer Miles,” but that’s a bit melodramatic. Two of the major US carriers (Delta and United) have transitioned their frequent miles programs from a distance-based system to revenue-based for earning miles. This change greatly benefits the airlines, following trends set by smaller airlines such as Southwest, Virgin America and Jet Blue, who already hand out miles based on ticket fare. Not to mention, Business and First Class passengers as they will earn more miles by paying for expensive tickets.

What does this mean for the average traveler?

Flight Deal: Virgin America (Honolulu to San Francisco or Los Angeles)

 virign america

A friend of mine alerted me today that Virgin America, who recently launched services from the West Coast to Hawaii, has a great fare sale between Honolulu-Los Angeles and Honolulu-San Francisco. She just booked a roundtrip ticket for $340 HNL-SFO. That’s an awesome deal!

I know I promote miles and points to fly for almost free, but sometimes it’s not a bad idea to pay for flights if there’s a great deal. As of this post, Virgin America still has flights available at $169 one-way. This is a great deal to the West Coast.

What’s the Offer?

Flights between Hawaii and San Francisco or Los Angeles are available for $169 one-way from now until May 2016.

Let’s take a look at Virgin’s monthly calendar for HNL-SFO to see what’s available at this moment. A quick check shows more availability in San Francisco.

Flight Deals: Airfarewatchdog

airfarewatchdog

I have spent the past couple of months touting miles and points as a means to earn and redeem for an almost-free vacation. However, sometimes paying for a flight is a necessity, for instance you may be short on points or have no points at all, the airline has limited award seats, or you prefer paying low fares for domestic flights to save your miles for a better redemption value like an international award ticket.

Finding cheap airline fares is not so easy to do. There’s no algorithm or magic ball that can predict when airline prices will fall. When I plan a trip I personally check online daily, sometimes every morning and evening, to find a low fare, and I have on multiple occasions. I’m well aware that most people aren’t as methodical or disciplined as I am to check daily (or you have better things to do with your time), that’s why there are other programs and websites that can do the work for you.

One such website is Airfarewatchdog. They identify low fares for your specific route and send you alerts when prices drop. It’s not a computer program scanning the web, rather, human beings searching hundreds of routes daily and actually verifying that the routes are bookable online. Saves you time and, in many cases, money.

Shop at Pearlridge this weekend to earn HawaiianMiles!                                                (Bottom: example of previous promotions at Windward Mall & Kahala Mall)

If you’re planning to go shopping this weekend, head over to Pearlridge Center to earn 3x HawaiianMiles per $1 spent. The deal is valid January 16-17.

If you’re a resident of Oahu and a HawaiianMiles member, you’ve probably received various emails throughout the year regarding bonus miles for shopping at Pearlridge Center, Windward Mall, Kahala Mall, and Kapolei Shopping Center. If you’ve elected not to receive marketing or partner promotion emails, you may be missing out on some deals. But don’t worry, I’ll let you know all about it.

I’m not familiar if there are offers for neighbor islands, but if there is, let me know.

Fly Hawaiian Airlines with American AAdvantage Miles

american airlines website

Did you know that Hawaiian Airlines and American Airlines are partners and that you’re able to redeem AAdvantage miles to fly on Hawaiian? And that sometimes it’s better to use AAdvantage miles because their redemption rates may be lower?

This partnership is unique because Hawaiian is not part of OneWorld Alliance that American is a member of, which includes international carriers like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Air Berlin, Japan Airlines, and others. While the partnership is not as extensive as an alliance, there are valuable redemptions to be made that are better than using HawaiianMiles.

Important Note: American Airlines is making changes to its award chart, effective March 22, 2016, which will increase the miles redemption for certain award tickets. However, there’s still time to book before the changes go into effect, but even after the changes there are still valuable redemptions to be made.
