There are so many more activities, accommodations, and restaurants on Maui that I hope to get to one day. In the meantime, I’ll start off with the list below and keep adding as I experience more of the island.
THINGS TO DO:
Haleakala National Park: Haleakala is a dormant volcano that offers many hiking trails and an amazing view of the sunrise. Some people like to bike down the mountain, but the roads are narrow and windy so ride with caution. For first time visitors, driving to Haleakala is a must. Depending where you are on the island, be prepared to start the drive before 4:00am. Don’t forget a jacket; it’s very cold at 10,000 feet elevation.
Drive to Hana: This is a crazy drive on windy, narrow roads, but the scenery may be worth all that to reach the secluded town. There are various hiking trails, waterfalls, and fresh water pools along the drive, and a black sand beach at the end of the road at Waianapanapa. Plan on 2-5 hours depending how far you go and how long you stay at the beach or pools.
Ziplining: There are many companies that offer this activity, from Haleakala to Ka’anapali. Soaring through the air over lush green landscapes is a thrill.
Whale Watching: I haven’t personally done this, but this is an activity to consider if you’re visiting the islands from December to May. For more information, go to Maui Whale Watch Tours.
Nakalele Blowhole: On the north western side of the island is a rocky cliff with waves crashing on the shore, creating a geyser-like eruption up to 100 feet in the air. Bring a good pair of shoes to trek down the cliff to view the waves. Stay clear of the blowhole to prevent being sucked in. Admire from a distance.

PLACES TO STAY:
Andaz Wailea: I like this Hyatt property. It’s more adult friendly than family friendly. The infinity pools and hot tub are relaxing. You can walk right onto Wailea beach if you prefer ocean activities. The restaurants on property are pricey, but offer delicious food.
Hyatt Regency Maui: This Hyatt hotel is very family friendly with a large pool for adults and separate kid’s pool area with small and large slides (I went down the large one when the kids disappeared). Walk right onto Ka’anapali Beach or take a short walk on Beach Walk to Whaler’s Village.
Ka’anapali Beach Club: I described this property in detail in my trip report, but this timeshare property is a nice place to stay for families.

I LOVE FOOD!
Da Kitchen: The first place I stop by after landing in Kahului. It’s located near the airport and I love their fried spam musubi. They also offer many local favorites like loco moco and fresh catch entrées.
Leilani’s on the Beach: Located at Whaler’s Village in Ka’anapali, this restaurant is pretty pricey but the food is delicious. We enjoyed eating the sashimi, clam chowder, prime rib, and lobster. The view at sunset is amazing, so make dinner reservations early and ask for a seat with the best views.
Hula Grill: Located at Whaler’s Village in Ka’anapali, this restaurant offers a great menu of local foods and fresh fish. Try the hula pie; it’s super large but delicious.
Sansei: I loved this restaurant at Kapalua because of the amazing kama’aina (locals) offer of 50% off on Sundays and Mondays for early bird dining. The food is great. We tried so many things on the menu like panko-crusted ahi sashimi, crab ramen, shrimp dynamite, miso butterfish, and calamari. Plan on getting there at least half an hour early to get in on the early bird specials as no reservations are taken.
Plantation House: If you love golf, this restaurant sits at the Kapalua Golf-Plantation Course where the PGA’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions takes place. The views of Kapalua shore and the golf course are breathtaking, and the food is tasty.
Koa’s Seaside Grill: A beachside restaurant in old Lahaina town, the food is tasty and view of the water is nice and calming. The seared ahi, poke tacos, and short ribs were delicious.
