An easy way to earn miles is registering your credit cards to a dining program. I’ve earned thousands of miles over the years just by eating at restaurants. As you can see from the picture above, this year I’m focused on earning American (I’m a VIP Member) and United miles from their dining programs.
How Does This Work?
It’s easy to sign up. Some programs offer a sign-up bonus, so it could be beneficial to join when it’s available.
- Go to the program you want to earn points and click Join Now or Sign Up. Fill out your information and check the box to receive emails.
- Register a credit card. The more cards on file, the better chance you won’t leave any miles on the table.
- Dine at any of the participating restaurants. You can search online to see what restaurants are available for a particular night. Some don’t offer points for weekends and holidays.
- Your frequent flyer account will be credited based on your membership level:
- VIP Member – earn 5 miles per dollar
- you qualify for VIP after 12 dining transactions in a calendar year and sign up to receive emails
- IHG earns 8x at this level

What Programs are Available?
Depending on your travel goals, sign up for one or many programs and register your credit cards specifically used for dining. I personally register all my cards that earn 2x points or more for dining.
Here is a list of all airline programs and their current sign-up bonuses:
- American AAdvantage – 1,000 bonus by spending $30 in your first 30 days
- United MileagePlus – 1,000 bonus by spending $30 in your first 30 days (up to 6,000 for additional spending)
- Delta Skymiles – 500 bonus on first dine in your first 30 days (up to 3,000 for additional dining)
- Southwest Rapid Rewards– 750 bonus by spending $25 in your first 30 days (note: Active level is 3x miles earning)
- Alaska MileagePlan– 1,000 bonus by spending $30 in your first 30 days
- JetBlue
- Spirit
A couple hotels participate as well, although I haven’t signed up for them.
- IHG – 2,000 bonus on first dine in your first 30 days
- Hilton Honors – 1,000 bonus on first dine in your first 30 days (up to 2,000 for additional dining)
Tips to Keep in Mind
- Do not register the same credit card for more than one program. For example, if you link an AMEX card on United, then sign up for Delta months later and link the same AMEX card, your United dining rewards account could be deleted.
- Log-in credentials vary per program. I like that United keeps the same login as their website, whereas AA and Delta require different user names.
The Final Word…
I like Dining Rewards Network because it’s an easy way to earn points. Sometimes I actively search online for a participating restaurant before I eat out. If you don’t want to be consciously thinking about miles when dining, it’s still good to register your credit cards anyway. You never know, you could be surprised to receive bonus miles after eating a great meal.
