Earn Miles without Flying: Rocketmiles

Another airline partner program that I want to highlight is Rocketmiles, an online hotel search engine where you earn miles instead of hotel loyalty points. Rocketmiles offers different earning rates per hotel per night, so it’s a good idea to check online if you have a paid hotel stay planned as you could earn thousands of miles.

Generally, I don’t like to pay for my hotel stays, rather I redeem points for free nights. However, there are occasions when paying cash is worth the value of the points earned. For example, I linked my United Airlines account to Rocketmiles on my last paid reservation and earned 6,000 miles for a $100 one-night stay (1,000 miles/night + 5,000 sign-up bonus). Not bad for only one night.

How Does This Work?

Rocketmiles is similar to Orbitz, Trivago or Kayak when booking a hotel online. All you need to do is sign up, link you frequent flyer miles account and book a hotel. It’s that easy.

If you’re a new member, I don’t suggest going to Rocketmiles.com directly to join. Many airlines offer a sign-up bonus if you register through their website or partner links. Most sign-up bonuses are 3,000 miles plus the miles earned per night. Last year, American and United both offered 5,000 mile bonuses, so it’s always good to check what’s available.

Currently, United has a 3,000 mile sign-up bonus to expire March 31, 2016.

What Programs are Available?

There are many other programs that partner with Rocketmiles, but my focus is on earning miles with the major airline carriers.

Is This Worth It?

Yes, it’s good to book through Rocketmiles only if you are planning to pay for your upcoming hotel reservation anyway and the cost is comparable to its competitors. Booking on Rocketmiles is usually competitive with booking with hotels directly. On occasion, the cost is slightly higher, so it’s good to compare prices prior to booking.

In the examples below, I checked Rocketmiles for two popular hotels in Waikiki for a week in March 2016. I compared the rates with same room type and refundable terms. As you can see, the first hotel is comparable in cost, while the second is slightly higher.

In this example, best rates on Hilton's website is $259/night and Outrigger is $249/night.

In this example, best rates on Hilton’s website is $259/night which is comparable to Rocketmiles, while Outrigger is $249/night which is far cheaper.

Tips to Keep in Mind

The Final Word…

Rocketmiles is a good program to accumulate miles if you’re paying for a hotel stay anyway. I personally like to stay at Hyatt and IHG hotels and have elite status with both (through my co-branded credit cards, not by paid stays), so earning hotel points is important to me. But if there’s a good deal where I can earn thousands of miles on cheaper hotel rates, I would consider paying for the reservation. Until then, I’ll continue to earn and redeem hotel points so I don’t have to budget for my hotel stays on my vacations.
