*UPDATED 12/4/15: offer extended to December 31st.*
Hawaiian Airlines, along with Delta, has been my preferred airline for over a decade. I fly Hawaiian to the neighbor islands, West Coast and New York, and have plans to fly to their international destinations like Japan, China and Australia in the near future. I surmise that a large number of people in Hawaii choose to fly Hawaiian as well and probably already have the Bank of Hawaii/Barclaycard HawaiianMiles credit card. I’ve had mine since college (originally with Bank of America), earning hundreds of thousands of miles and redeeming for many award tickets throughout the years.
For the few people who do not have this card, there is a great sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles, increased from their normal 35,000 offer.
Before Applying for Credit Cards
As I previously mentioned in Getting Started with Miles & Points, applying for credit cards is my #1 way of earning miles as sign-up bonuses are very lucrative. However, I continue to stress that you shouldn’t apply for any credit card without understanding the following:
- Know your personal credit score and review your credit report. Generally, applying for reward credit cards require a high credit score. This number varies per person, but a good score is usually above 700.
- Be familiar with financial aspects that affect your credit score, such as your credit utilization ratio, hard credit inquiries, length of credit history, payment history, types of accounts, etc.
- ALWAYS pay your credit card in full each month, as carrying a balance and paying fees will negate the value of points you earn.
- Be super organized. Know all important dates and deadlines for payments, annual fees or sign-up bonuses.
- If you’re applying for a large loan, such as a mortgage, applying for many credit cards within a year or two of the application or carrying credit card debt may affect your mortgage approval.

There are currently two offers in the market for new members, one online and one in-flight. I’ll go over both options.
Promotion #1
Promotion details:
- 50,000 sign-up bonus for new cardmembers only
- Receive bonus after spending $1,000 in net purchases in the first 90 days after account opening
- Note: account opening is when the account is approved, not when your card is mailed to you
- Annual fee is $89 (charged within 6 weeks of account opening)
- EXPIRES: November 30, 2015 extended until December 31, 2015
How to apply:
- Log in on Hawaiian Airlines or Join HawaiianMiles.
- New cardmembers will see this banner below. Click Apply Now.
- Before filling out the application, confirm the sign-up bonus of 50,000 miles. Take a snapshot to keep as backup in case there is an internal IT error that doesn’t link your bonus to your account. This rarely happens (never happened to me), but some people have reported mistakes.
Promotion #2
Promotion details:
- 50,000 sign-up bonus for new cardmembers only
- Receive bonus after spending $1,000 in net purchases in the first 90 days after account opening
- Note: account opening is when the account is approved, not when your card is mailed to you
- Annual fee is $89 (charged within 6 weeks of account opening)
- EXPIRES: January 2, 2016
How to apply:
- If you’re flying on Hawaiian Airlines, or know someone who is, flight attendants are passing out pamphlets for their holiday bonus of 50,000 miles. You can either fill out the form and mail it by the due date or give customer service a call.
Promotion #3 (possible phone offer)
While calling customer service to get more information about the holiday offer that expires on January 2nd, the rep told me they also had a phone offer for 50,000 miles if you were informed by the airlines or possibly referred by someone who did fly and told you about the offer. He said that phone offer did not have an expiration date so it could expire at any time. I wouldn’t take this as an official offer, as reps can have different information, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Hawaiian Airlines World Elite MasterCard Benefits
Cardmember benefits include:
- Earn 1x miles on purchases, 2x miles on Hawaiian Airlines flights
- Earn up to 10x miles on cardmember exclusives with participating partners
- Complimentary first checked bag free for primary cardmember when you use your card to purchase tickets on Hawaiian Airlines
- One-time 50% off companion ticket for roundtrip travel between Hawaii and North America
- Annual $100 companion ticket discount for roundtrip travel between Hawaii and North America
- Earn 5,000 miles annual bonus when you spend $10,000
- ShareMiles allows members to transfer miles from their account to primary cardholders for free
- No foreign transaction fees
The Final Word…
I recommend applying for this card if you fly Hawaiian often, plan to fly Hawaiian to achieve a specific travel goal, or want to diversify your miles portfolio. Even with the $89 annual fee the first year, paying the fee is worth 50,000 bonus miles. If you decide not to keep the card in the future, I suggest you cancel after 8-10 months, which gives you time to evaluate the card. Cancelling after receiving the bonus is not good as banks frown on that behavior.

Mahalo! I called and applied this weekend. The phone offer is still available for 50k miles. I asked about 50k and they signed me up for it. I’m going to use the miles for a flight to New York this fall.

Great, thanks for letting me know that the offer is still valid. I’ll confirm again with Hawaiian if there’s an expiration and post an update. Thanks for reading my blog.
