Fly Hawaiian Airlines with American AAdvantage Miles

Did you know that Hawaiian Airlines and American Airlines are partners and that you’re able to redeem AAdvantage miles to fly on Hawaiian? And that sometimes it’s better to use AAdvantage miles because their redemption rates may be lower?

This partnership is unique because Hawaiian is not part of OneWorld Alliance that American is a member of, which includes international carriers like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Air Berlin, Japan Airlines, and others. While the partnership is not as extensive as an alliance, there are valuable redemptions to be made that are better than using HawaiianMiles.

Important Note: American Airlines is making changes to its award chart, effective March 22, 2016, which will increase the miles redemption for certain award tickets. However, there’s still time to book before the changes go into effect, but even after the changes there are still valuable redemptions to be made.

How Do You Book Hawaiian Airlines with AAdvantage?

Searching for an award ticket is so easy on AA.com.

American’s online search engine is one of the easiest to navigate. Go to aa.com, input your cities and dates, check “redeem miles” and press Search. The system will populate available flights and let you know how many miles are needed to redeem one-way tickets. That’s it. You don’t even have to log in to see the miles.

The best value is MilesSAAver Off Peak and MilesSAAver award tickets. I would not book Anytime or Business/First Class unless you need the flexibility or have lots of miles to burn. I prefer to redeem the least amount so I can redeem more awards. Award Charts

Generally, I don’t spend time looking over award charts since availability is displayed on the search engine. The charts are more of a guideline to help you see redemption options to set your travel goals.

Below is American’s current redemption rates and new rates as of March 22, 2016.

Neighbor Island Travel

I circled in red the interisland redemption rates to compare Hawaiian and American. As you can see, if you have AAdvantage miles and book an interisland flight now, it only cost 5,000 miles one-way, whereas Hawaiian is 7,500 miles. After March 22^nd, American’s partner award chart will be comparable to Hawaiian’s SuperSaver level at 7,500 miles. So book now for a future neighbor island trip at the lower rate of 5,000 miles one-way.

International Travel

I circled in blue to compare the redemption levels for travel to Japan or Seoul. I personally booked an upcoming trip to Japan for 25,000 AAdvantage miles one-way, while it cost 40,000-60,000 miles on Hawaiian for the same flight. That’s a huge value! After March 22^nd, American’s partner chart will increase to 32,500 miles (65,000 roundtrip), which is still fewer miles than redeeming on Hawaiian.

Mainland Travel

As of last year, American and Hawaiian dissolved their benefits for travel from Hawaii to the mainland. In other words, you cannot redeem AAdvantage miles to fly on Hawaiian to the West Coast, New York, or other mainland locations.

The Final Word…

There is value in redeeming award tickets using AAdvantage miles for Hawaiian Airline flights. I booked a great deal of 50,000 miles roundtrip to Japan this year, which saved me 30,000 miles had I booked using HawaiianMiles (I’ll post a trip report after we travel). Although American is making program changes by increasing the amount of miles to redeem certain award tickets, there are instances where American requires fewer miles than Hawaiian. I plan to book more neighbor island travel at 5,000 miles one-way before it increases, but 7,500 isn’t that bad either.
