AMEX Membership Rewards 25% Transfer Bonus to HawaiianMiles

MR 25% transfer bonus to HA

For a limited time, American Express Membership Rewards is offering a 25% bonus when transferring to Hawaiian Airlines. This offer expires December 21, 2015.

What is Membership Rewards?

Membership Rewards (MR) is a rewards program offered by American Express (AMEX). By using credit cards enrolled in the program, you can redeem points for travel, shopping, gift cards, statement credits and more. Even better, if you have these specific credit cards such as the Premier Rewards Gold (I have this one), Platinum Card, Green Card or Everyday Card, they earn full MR points which allow you to transfer points to partner airlines. There are other cards that earn limited MR points that aren’t able to transfer.

My main interest in MR points is solely on travel, thus I can’t speak to the rest of the program. I like the benefits of a travel portal to book or redeem points for flights, hotels, cars, and activities, and transferring points to partners like HawaiianMiles.

Please note: I am not advocating applying for a credit card, especially if AMEX is not part of achieving your travel goal. However, if you decide to apply, I’d wait for a high bonus offer as AMEX instituted earlier this year a once-per-lifetime policy on sign-up bonuses on personal credit cards, which means if you cancelled a card and applied again 10 years from now, you wouldn’t be eligible for another sign-up bonus. I strive to earn the highest bonus the first time around.

Is This a Good Deal?

The normal transfer rate is 1:1, or 1,000 points=1,000 miles. With this deal you’d receive a 25% bump, 1,000 points=1,250 miles. This is a good deal for residents of Hawaii or those who fly Hawaiian all the time. I personally have transferred a bunch of points as Hawaiian is one of my preferred airlines. There is a small fee that AMEX charges to transfer to an airline, but I don’t believe it’s a deterrent as I find great value when redeeming for award tickets.

Can I Transfer to Other Partners?

Yes. AMEX offers transfer bonuses for various partners throughout the year, so unless you need the miles to top off an account, I would wait for a bonus that benefits you.

Below are airline and hotel transfer options.

The Final Word…

I fly Hawaiian to the neighbor islands, mainland, and soon internationally, so transferring MR points is a no-brainer for me. If you have your heart set on another transfer option or prefer to redeem points for travel or shopping, then go ahead and do that instead.
